Acoustic Basics

Acoustic Basics

Major Objectives and Sub-Content:

1. Understanding the basics of ultrasound wave composition

  • Sound wave pulse
  • Wavelength and frequency

2. How does US make an image

  • Principle of US imaging
  • Pulse length and imaging
  • Pulse repetition frequency and imaging
  • 3. How does US travels through a medium and transfer between media
    • Sound wave propagation
    • Incident wave: Propagation velocity, Acoustic impedance
    • Reflection: Impedance mismatch, Specular Patter, Diffuse Pattern, Refraction
    • Attenuation
    Key Message:

Knowledge of the acoustic physics does not preclude you from using PoCUS.

However, it does help you troubleshoot to improve imaging quality and, also, more importantly, appreciate artifacts when they are generated lest misdiagnosis.
