Basics of Scanning - Scanning Planes

1.  Relative to the Body
  • Coronal (aka. Frontal)
  • Sagittal
  • Axial (aka. Transverse)
  • Oblique: combination of the above
2.  Relative to the Organ

All objects except for perfectly symmetrical shapes (cube & sphere) have a long & short axis
  • Long Axis: the plane of the organ with the longest length (90o to the short axis)
  • Short Axis: the plane of the organ with the shortness length (90o to the long axis)

Take Home Messages:
  • Scanning planes can be relative to the body or the organ itself
