Case 3 - Pleural Space

Indication:

Given the examination findings, it was most likely bilateral pleural effusion.  The use of the PoCUS was to verify the presence of the effusion, size, and feasibility for thoracentesis.

Image Acquisition:

Zones 4 were both imaged first as it did not require the patient to sit up and lean forward.

Interpretation:

The pleural space, bilaterally, were very complex.  The images highly suggested an exudative process.

Clinical Synthesis:

Given her metastatic ovarian cancer, the thought was that this complex fluid was secondary to pleural space and/or lung metastasis.  CT chest was, hence, ordered to define the complex space and the lung parenchymal prior to pleural space therapeutics.

The pleural fluid yielded the ovarian malignant cells.
