Machinery and Knobology - Machinery

1.  Components: The US machine as a whole consists of four fundamental components.
  • Transducer: emits pulse US waves, receives reflected echo waves, then converts the sound wave into electrical signals
  • Processor: analyzes the electrical signals to generate the image
  • Monitor: displays the image
  • Interactive Interface: allows the user to control the other three elements.
Despite the many different shapes of US machines, these four parts will surely be present. The difference is that some brands integrate some of the components into one.
2.  Reference Machinery

There are many machines out there in the market with their own setups and features.

For Queen's Internal Medicine at the Kingston General Hospital site, the two most common machines you will be using are the Sonosite M-Turbo and Mindray TE7.

For the remainder of the lectures, we will be referencing to the knobology of these two machines.
